CARS2019: 5th International Workshop on Critical Automotive Applications
The 5th International Workshop on Critical Automotive Applications: Robustness & Safety (CARS2019) took place in Naples on 17 September 2019.
The increasing complexity of automotive applications, the challenges posed by autonomous vehicles, the need to master production costs using off-the-shelf components, the coexistence of critical and non-critical applications, and the emergence of new architectural paradigms may have a strong effect on dependability of automotive embedded systems. This situation requires design and validation methods, but also tools to improve automotive systems robustness and their safety and security properties.
CARS2019 targeted functional safety, dependability, and security experts from the automotive industry interested in the construction of critical automotive applications and systems. Workshop themes included: dependability issues, software engineering for robustness, security and safety issues, real-time embedded systems technologies, architectural software and hardware solutions, development processes for dependable automotive embedded systems.
The keynote from Global5G.org Deputy Coordinator John Favaro described the latest developments in the Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) community, noting that the CARS2019 stakeholder group has had very little, if any, interaction with this community and that their work may not be known to them.
Main Takeaways
The dependability community has derived theoretical results about the limits of a group of communicating entities. These hard-won results could be valuable for the CAM community, especially communicating devices in "noisy environments", which could sharpen their definitions of the use cases and help them evaluate their effective implementations. For example, one 5G case uses V2V communication to arrive at a collaborative decision about how to manoeuvre inside an intersection or highway onramp.
Interaction between this automotive and the CAM community would bring new insights and an exchange of experiences to reach a consensus that is agreed and known to all in a common quest for progress in their respective fields.
It is therefore important to explore ways of bringing the two sides together. Moving forward, FULL5G will continue to drive engagement across the two stakeholder groups with a view to increasing understanding of safety and dependability issues.
